The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) has released its 2023 Audit of Antisemitic Incidents, revealing a staggering 200% increase in antisemitic acts in San Diego compared to the previous year. A total of 108 incidents were recorded, encompassing assaults, vandalism, and harassment. Notably, 58 of these incidents occurred in the final 85 days of the year, following the October 7 massacre in Israel and the ensuing conflict in Gaza.
Fabienne Perlov, Regional Director of ADL San Diego, emphasized the human impact behind these numbers:
"These statistics are not just numbers. There is an innocent person behind each and every one of them; from a college student harassed for wearing a Star of David necklace, to Jewish residents finding antisemitic flyers in their driveways, or a rabbi being assaulted at a grocery store. This must stop."
🔍 Key Findings:
Assaults: Two reported assaults, including one targeting a rabbi at a local grocery store.
Vandalism: 18 incidents, such as swastikas drawn with feces at UC San Diego and large swastikas defacing private and public properties.
Flyer Distribution: White supremacist groups disseminated thousands of antisemitic flyers across 20 occasions in areas including San Diego, La Jolla, La Mesa, Santee, and Valley Center.
This alarming trend mirrors a global rise in antisemitism, with Jewish communities worldwide facing heightened tensions and hatred, particularly in response to geopolitical events.
